The Safe Streets grant is administered by the FHWA, this portion of the grant is the planning and demonstration portion with the goal of developing a transportation safety plan to be adopted and utilized as a method for reducing roadway accident.
This portion also has the opportunity for the Caddo Nation Transportation department to bring awareness to the communities through public outreach and demonstration. Creating a partnership with school systems and law enforcement agencies within the WCD jurisdiction to inform and educate the goal written in the Caddo Nation Safety Plan.
Some of the goals in the safety plan will include reducing roadway departures which account for 50% of accidents within the WCD jurisdiction (per the statistics of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol), speed related accidents (15%) and drunk driving (15%), and animals related accidents (10%).
Countermeasures to prevent roadway departures are being looked into for effectiveness and cost at each of the areas of high risk and potential high-risk areas.
The ultimate goal of the safety plan is to bring the roadway fatalities within the WCD jurisdiction ZERO fatalities.
